Acne and Acne Scarring
Clear Skin, Lasting Confidence
Evidence-based treatments for active acne and long-term scar improvement.

Acne isn’t just a teenage concern- it can affect anyone at any age, often impacting confidence and quality of life. At Dr. Tranter Aesthetics, we understand that acne and the scarring it can leave behind require a precise, personalized approach. As a doctor-led clinic, we combine medical expertise, prescription options, and advanced technology to address both the cause and the after-effects of acne.
What is Acne & Acne Scarring?
Acne is a chronic inflammatory skin condition involving the hair follicle and oil (sebaceous) gland. It can present as blackheads, whiteheads, papules, pustules, or deeper cysts. If untreated or severe, acne can damage the skin’s structure, leading to permanent scarring.
Acne Pathophysiology
Acne develops through four main factors:
Excess sebum production – overactive oil glands make the skin more prone to congestion.
Follicular hyperkeratinisation – dead skin cells build up inside pores, forming a plug.
Bacterial overgrowth – Cutibacterium acnes (C. acnes) thrives in the blocked follicle.
Inflammation – the immune system responds, causing redness, swelling, and sometimes pain.
These processes often occur together, which is why effective acne management needs a multifactorial approach.
Why It Happens
Acne can be triggered or worsened by:
Hormonal changes (puberty, menstrual cycle, pregnancy, menopause)
Genetics
Certain medications or cosmetics
Stress and diet (high-glycaemic foods may contribute)
Poor skin barrier function
Our Approach at Dr Tranter Aesthetics
We start with a detailed skin consultation to assess your acne severity, skin type, and any scarring. As a medical clinic, we can prescribe targeted medications where appropriate, alongside in-clinic treatments to reduce breakouts, calm inflammation, and improve skin texture over time.
Your treatment plan will always:
Address active acne first
Support skin barrier health
Target and remodel scars once breakouts are controlled
FAQs
-
Active acne is treated first to prevent further scarring, followed by targeted scar treatments once breakouts are under control.
-
Acne can recur if underlying triggers remain. We provide ongoing skincare, lifestyle, and maintenance advice to minimize recurrence.
-
Prescription treatments may show improvement within 6–12 weeks; in-clinic treatments for scarring may require multiple sessions for best results.
